Patriots Down Aztex, 2-1, in Austin, Tie for Second [VIDEO]

The El Paso Patriots rebounded from Friday night’s 1-0 loss at Laredo in fine fashion, getting an 88th-minute game-winner from Michael Griego to beat the Austin Aztex in Austin, 2-1, Saturday.

It’s the first road win this season for El Paso and it couldn’t have come at a better time. The full three points vaults the Patriots back into second place in the PDL’s Mid-South Division, tied with Austin, just three points off the pace set by defending division champ, Laredo.

The stats bear out the result as El Paso allowed few chances for the Aztex. The Patriots’ offense, on the other hand, churned out chance after chance, out-shooting their hosts, 12-6, in the game.

Sergio Villasenor returned from his red card suspension served in Friday’s game against the Heat to score in the 50th minute.

El Paso would hold the lead for more than a half hour before Zack Pope lifted in a beautiful cross for Kristopher Tyrpak. As goalkeeper Javier Lane came off his line to make a play on Pope’s long pass from right wing, Tyrpak beat him to the ball, first-timing the pass with a twisting header for the equalizer in the 81st.

But as time was running out, Griego, the former U20 National Teamer, got a step on his marker and promptly blasted a 25-yard bomb past outstretched goalie Devin Cook into the left upper 90.
